Hi I would like to lay some turf , make some paths to chicken run, two raised garden beds and two fruit tress. Is wood chips good for paths? and good at keeping weeds at bay?. Would the wood chips harm the fruit trees one peach and one orange. I do not want to encourage termites. What is a good wood chip to use? I don't want to use pebbles or stones. Thankyou.
Hi Gary In Australia there are a few mulches that are considered to be termite resistant. The most resistant is Cypress Heartwood - it contains resins that are harmful to termites. Other alternatives are Cedar Mulch and Tea Tree Mulch. Of the three Cypress will take the longest to breakdown. Tea Tree mulch is quite fine and not really suitable or a path. With all mulches you will need to replace them as they rot down. Mulch should be kept about 15cm away from the base of the trunk. Have you thought of placing paving stone along the path and filling the gaps with wood chip. Alternatively you could create your own rustic path using recycled bricks and pavers.
