Ferns/Palms/Cycads > Advice please
Hi guys, Im the owner of a large staghorn that is starting to look rather sad and Im struggling to find information on how to help it start to get better. It sees to be falling away from the board it is mounted to and I plan on remounting it on a Piece of 18mm Plywood but Im unsure how to go about this. It also has alot of dead foliage in the top and Im wondering if I should trim these when I remount it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Morgan
The staghorn has two types of leaves the large circular fronds that wrap around the roots and collect the nutrients and water. When you water make sure you water behind the these frond, if you haven't done so already you should place compost and solid organic fertilisers between the backing leaves and the mounting board. The drooping multi-lobed lobes that grow from the centre of the backing fronds are the fertile fronds, these can be removed at the point of origin once they are spent. If decide to transfer the fern to a new board then repack area between the backing leaves and new backing board with fresh sphagnum moss compost and solid organic fertiliser.
