Hey there Jo, Garlic has to be one of the easiest plants to grow and the best time to plant is autumn. Just break off a clove and push it (square end down) into the soil to a depth of about the length of your index finger.
Any soil will do - though if its very waterlogged the clove might rot - well drained is always best.
If its very light and sandy then ensure it gets regular watering, otherwise a wetting twice a week will do. When you see some green sprouting through you can give it a weak mix of general purpose liquid fertiliser.
Make sure you pull them before they flower or go to seed.
There is hardly an easier plant to grow - and gee, they add so much to your cooking as well.
