Gaultheria procumbens or Wintergreen is grown for its oval, shiny, evergreen, aromatic foliage along with white or pink flowers and red berries.
It is a small, low growing shrub with pretty bell shaped flowers that either appear alone or in short racemes that are followed by dry berry-like, edible fruits that taste like slightly sweet Wintergreen and last throughout winter.
The leaves and branches make a good herbal infusion drink.
They have long underground rhizomes which help them to spread and form small colonies.
Gaultheria procumbens is frost hardy and has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It makes an excellent groundcover for shady areas and goes very well in woodland settings and rock gardens.
Loving acidic soils, they make a good accent for Azalea and Rhododendron.
