This small to medium, rounded evergreen shrub is a native dry and gravelly hillsides of coastal California. It is a good choice for borders in coastal gardens.
This species can be used to add contrast to the darker leaved plants along your garden borders. The leaves are light grey-green leaves becoming almost silvery as they age, they are covered with a short dense hairs that give a felt-like appearance. As with all Salvia the leaves and stems contain glands that release a strong aroma when touched.
From late winter to spring lavender coloured two-lipped flowers are produced in whorls towards the end of the stems.
The blooms are great for attracting birds and insects.
