A hardy and deciduous spreading shrub from north east Asia that bears pendulous bell shaped flowers in springtime in racemes of 10-15.
The flowers are quite beautiful being creamy topped and distinctly veined with red leading down to deep red mouths.
They are similar in shape to the closely related Pieris.
Being deciduous the bright green and glossy foliage turns to bright reds and oranges in autumn. Keep them away from strong winds to get the best of that autumnal colour.
They go well with other woodland plants like Rhodendron, Pieris and Azalea and being deciduous means that spring bulbs around its base will go well.
