Dianthus deltoides or Maiden Pink is a very frost hardy evergreen perennial ideal for rock gardens or groundcover as it forms a dense and colourful mat.
The foliage is small, narrow, linear to lance-shaped and often crowded and it bears compact flowers with serrated edged petals in pinks, cerise and white with a darker (usually red) centre.
They will flower initially in late spring, but then continue to produce flushes of flowers throughout the summer. It helps to trim off dead heads and excess foliage as this will encourage further blooming.
They are a very easy to grow perennial providing guaranteed success for the beginner gardener.
Maiden Pinks are an ideal flower for mixed planters and tubs, providing strong colour on patios.
They are also ideal for borders and are excellent for path edging.
