Mangifera indica, or the Mango is an evergreen tree with a broad thick canopy, grown for its delicious fruit.
If left untrimmed it will grow into a huge tree up to 24m in height. Most growers keep the plants well trimmed and maintained to 4m tall and 3m wide. They can be grown in pots but will need to be kept well trimmed.
It has long leaves that are pinkish when new. Pyramid clusters of small yellow to pink flowers during spring. Fruit grows in clusters and varies from kidney shaped to flatter and more elongated shapes.
The unripe fruit is green and turns yellow as it ripens
Plant mainly in tropical or subtropical climates - but the Mango goes well in the Mediterranean climate of WA as far south as Perth.
Often grown as shade tree in Sydney area, conditions are not always conducive to the setting of fruit and often fruit is not produced.
