Unwins mix Dahlias grow to around 60cm, producing early and mid season blooms of single and semi double flowers in a mix of colours that include white, yellow, lemon, crimson, red, purple and bronze. They are ideal for pots, borders and garden beds.
This is the ideal mix for gardeners who want a colourful selection of easy to grow Dahlias without having to select specific varieties.
The Dahlia is a bushy tuberous plant from Mexico and Central America. It has tall stems topped by a large showy brightly coloured many petalled flower.
The indigenous peoples used the tubers for a food source and the stems for making small pipes. The flowers are a source of food for moths and butterflies.
They have rich green, showy leaves.
This mix of tall-growing dahlias produces pompom flowers in a range of different colours through red, yellow and white. They are ideal for making a splash of colour in the border or bedding display during the summer months.
Dahlia flowers make an excellent, long lasting cut flower. When planted from seed they will flower in their first year.
The plant is tolerant of soil as to pH, soil type, heat, and sunlight, though they do need good soil moisture levels.
Sow the seeds onto the surface of a potting tray, firm them down and cover with a fine layer of soil. Cover the trays with polythene to maintain humidity, until the first seedlings are visible.
Germination takes around 7 days at 18-20 C.
Remove the cover and keep the seedlings moist at all times.
As soon as the plants are large enough to handle, usually at around three weeks, prick out into 7cm pots to grow on.
A balanced liquid feed should be applied as plants get establish. Once they are established and spring is well on its way, you can plant outdoors 30-45cm apart in soil with a good nutrient content.
Water well in summer as Dahlias do not like dry conditions.
