Ochna serrulata is a bushy, semi evergreen shrub growing up to 2.5m in height and at up 2m in width.
Th leaves are elliptic with a finely toothed margin, in spring the new growth is a bronze-red in colour turning bright green as it matures.
In spring pretty bright yellow, saucer shaped flowers appear. As the flowers age the petals fall and the calyx turns bright red with black round fruit that look like Mickey Mouse's ear, hence the common name for the plant.
Birds eat fruit and distribute the seeds through the bush, dead head flowers to prevent fruit forming.
This is a significant environmental weed in NSW and Queensland and potential environmental weed in all other states. We recommend finding an alternative non evasive plant.
