Punica granatum (/i)or the common Pomegranate is a semi-deciduous shrub or small tree with light green, blunt-tipped, shiny, mid green foliage.
In spring and summer it produces large, funnel-shaped red/orange flowers. Single flowers are fertile and will produce fruit. Double flowers are sterile and purely ornamental.
The mature fruit has a leathery skin and is full of seeds surrounded by jelly-like flesh. The juice is popular as a healthy drink.
Useful as an ornamental for background fill and shrubberies, with the added benefit of the tasty fruits.
Being quite dense they also make a good screen.
