Tipuana tipu is a very fast growing, medium sized, deciduous tree that is grown largely for shade but also has some rather spectacular flowers in late summer, albeit that they don't last for long.
The mid green foliage is pinnately compound, made up of leaflets around 5-6cms long and the five petaled, open faced, pea-like flowers are bright yellow.
The flowers mature to a typical legume type pod with one seed at the end, like a samara. And it is these seeds that are the main reason why it is not popular, because they germinate very well and it can be rather invasive as a result.
The other reason is the invasive roots which can lift concrete once established so take great care where you choose to plant one of these - far enough away to avoid problems but close enough to enjoy its good points.
