Paulownia tomentosa or the Empress Tree is a majestic deciduous tree with large, dark green, heart shaped leaves that are hairy.
It is the flowers, however, that make this tree absolutely charming.
It should be noted however that it is very invasive by nature.
A profusion of pink/lilac/yellow, bicoloured flowers that are a tubular, foxglove-like shape are borne in long panicles in spring creating quite a spectacular sight.
This is a very hardy tree that grows very quickly and is tolerant of atmospheric pollution.
An excellent shade tree and being deciduous will provide extra light (and sun's warmth) in winter when it can often be needed.
