Dicentra spectrabilis or Bleeding Heart is a popular perennial with fern-like foliage from which arch thin flower stems bearing heart shaped pinky red flowers along their length in late spring and summer.
It is very frost hardy and the foliage dies back to ground level after flowering.
These are easy to grow plants, very good for beginners and grow best in cooler climates, going well in shady portions of mixed borders or under trees.
They are perfect for brightening up difficult shady corners.
A popular variety is D.spectrabilis 'Alba' which is pure white.
