Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is a glossy-leaved, upright, evergreen shrub or small tree which produces a profusion of spectacular five petalled flowers in a variety of colours and colour combinations.
The splayed back form of the petals only serves to emphasise the protruding, yellow/orange tipped anthers even more.
it is one of the more common shrubs in the warmer climes of Australia, bringing a tropical feel to gardens and parks. However it doesn't like much under 10C.
It is a highly variable plant and there are many hybrids and cultivars including singles and doubles.
The Hawaiian hybrids are sometimes as large as dinner plates but they tend to be short lived, just one day per bloom but they keep on pumping them out at an amazing rate day after day for months on end.
