Overview
Zonal Pelargonium cultivars (Pelargonium x hortorum) have a branching, upright and bushy habit. The brightly coloured flowers vary from white or shades of pink, lavender, purple, orange, apricot, red and burgundy.
The flowers are produced in umbel-like clusters in Spring and Summer, in frost free areas they will continue flower to a less degree through autumn and winter.
The huge range of colour and large flowerheads make these a great addition to garden beds or pots and patios.
Soil: medium to light, well drained soil.
Maintenance: During the flowering season it is important to remove all the dead flowerheads to encourage new flowers to form. Pelargonium grow best when the soil is allowed to dry out between waterings. A regular fortnightly dose of liquid fertiliser whilst soil is wet during spring and summer will also encourage more flower production.
Tend to be frost tender. In areas susceptible to frosts - cut back by a third and move plants into dry frost free conditions before the first frost. In frost-free areas the plants can be left outside and may continue to flower (although less prolifically) during winter. Prune by a third at the end of winter before the new growth get going.
Diseases: The main problem with Zonal cultivars seems to be Rust which discolours and withers the leaves. Regular spraying with Rust Specific chemicals can help but doesn't seem to stop the problem. If you are having major problems, it may be worth digging them up and trying Regal or Ivy-Leafed pelargoniums which seem to be less affected.
Other Species: The RHS divides the group into two those produced by seed (F1 hybrids) and those cultivated from cuttings. Within the group the cultivars can also be divided according to flower shape, Cactus flowered, Double or Semi-double flowers, Formosum hybrids, Rosebud, Single and Stellar flowers. Also included in this group are Fancy leaved varieties grown mainly for there leaves.
Comments: The name means stork as the long fruit resembles a stork's bill.
