This large roundish shrub is native to Mexico where it grow at elevations of 850m to 2,500m.
There are many varieties within this species and they do vary. Some have mid-green glossy hairless leaves others leaves are covered with fine hairs and grey-green in colour.
From late summer to early autumn they produce a wonderful display of flowers that vary from a really deep purple to a lighter bluish-purple.
