Haywood is considered the best of all kiwi fruit for its large even sized fruit, ovalin shape and smooth skin. It has an excellent taste and texture, ideal for both desserts and snacking.
Kiwi fruit is rich in vitamins C and E and in flavonoid antioxidants.
The seeds contain 62% omega 3 fatty acids. It is also rich in actinin which makes it great for tenderising meat.
It is grown widely but does especially well in temperate areas where there is good summer temperatures.
Plant the seed shallowly in a tray or pot early in the spring. This should be done in a fine, somewhat sandy planter mix which is kept moist but not soaking wet.
Seed germinates in 4 to 5 weeks
Transplant into the garden when the seedling has outgrown your pot.
Start them in a 15 cm pot and put 3-5 seeds in each pot and then thin to the one best plant. You will need at least one male plant to each 8 female plants so observe your plants at flowering time.
The flowers are large and easy to distinguish.
Ensure that a sturdy frame is erected for the large vine to be supported without collapse.
