Only 30km southwest of Perth in a sheltered valley in the Darling Ranges these gardens are a wonderful surprise - especially in springtime.
August and September are THE special months to visit the gardens as all the spring flowers come into bloom; of particular note are the 100,000 Tulips, Daffodils, Azaleas. Camellias Rhododendrons and Magnolias.
This is peak season for Araluen and the facilities are very good - with extensive smooth pathways, electric scooters for those who can't walk long distances and a tourist train for those who prefer to sit back and enjoy these large gardens to the accompaniment of a knowledgeable vocal guide.
The rest of the year is less spectacular but still worth a visit as the unique micro climate of the area allows for the cultivation of exotic and cool climate plants. The camellia and rose collections have both received international acclaim - the roses being at their best in November.
As a place for a relaxing day - out in lovely, lush country surroundings or for a family picnic, Araluen is excellent any day of the year. And although the park is well maintained it is not an intense botanic experience as per other great gardens (except in spring) and plants are not identified with signs. GardensOnline does, however, recommend Araluen as a lovely garden haven in the Perth Hills featuring some excellent walks along with some very pretty lakes and waterfalls.
