There’s two ways to aerate a compacted lawn. The hard way is to push a fork into the turf – but even a small lawn this approach will need over 100 insertions and that
requires a lot of effort.
The easy way is to use these lawn aerator sandals. They are a very simple but effective design including a smooth surface, strap-on footplate and around a dozen steel spikes that protrude through the sole.
It's a one-size-fits-all design so those with small feet should wear their largest and bulkiest shoes to strap them on to.
Then its just a matter of walking carefully across the compacted area – your body weight doing all the hard work.
If the turf has had recent rain then the spikes will slide in more easily. But if the soil is very hard, you’ll need to walk quite slowly to ensure you gain maximum penetration with each step.
Your walking style will be different to just wearing normal shoes. Try to make your foot movements as vertical as possible e.g. place each foot down vertically and then lift it
up vertically before moving your leg diagonally forwards with your next step.
