Overview
Hosta undulata, commonly known as Wavy Hosta or Plantain Lily, is a popular perennial plant cherished for its lush foliage and ease of cultivation in shady domestic gardens.
The flowers are quite secondary to the spectacular foliage which is strikingly variegated and undulating in shape.
The classic understory plant, Hostas provide colour, texture and interest in those difficult to fill, especially lining shady pathways and under trees.
Originating from the far east they also contribute well to Japanese style gardens.
Soil: It prefers well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
Maintenance: Hosta undulata is relatively low-maintenance. Regular watering, mulching, and occasional division to control clump size are typically the main maintenance tasks.
Diseases: Common pests include slugs, snails which may feed on the foliage.
Hostas are also susceptible to diseases such as crown rot, leaf spots, and foliar nematodes.
Invasiveness: While not typically considered invasive, Hosta undulata can spread vigorously in favorable conditions. Regular division can help prevent overcrowding.
Toxicity: Hostas are generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, but ingestion may cause mild gastrointestinal upset.
Other Species: The genus Hosta includes numerous species and cultivars, each with its unique foliage and flower characteristics.
Comments: Hostas were originally classified within the Liliaceae family, then re-classified into the Asparagaceae family
and the subfamily Agavoideae.
However they have now been awarded their own plant family - Hostaceae.
