Erythrina x sykesiiis a large vigorous tree with a massive trunk and rather irregular shape.
The branches and trunk are covered with sharp toxic prickles. The branches are brittle and tend to snap easily.
It was originally planted in public areas where quick growing trees were needed; used less often now because of the weak branches and prickles.
It has large tri-foliate leaves with broadly ovate leaflets that turn brown before falling in early winter.
In late winter, the trees are easily recognised because the ends of the bare branches are covered with clusters of bright scarlet pea shaped flowers.
The flowers are sterile so no seeds are produced. However it is often considered a weed because roots readily grow from fallen branches and the roots system is very vigorous and can be invasive.
This is a really tough plant it will grow in well or poorly drained soils and will tolerate front line coastal areas if protected from wind and frost.
