Overview
A stout and hardy, deciduous tree that is rounded in shape with a dense spreading habit. One of its main features is its bark which is brown and fissured and quite soft. The leaves are dark green and have rounded lobes along the margins, and they remain dark green until they fall in autumn. Attractive acorns are borne in clusters. This is a very long-lived tree (600-700 years) and it makes a great shade tree, but only for large landscapes.
Soil: Prefers well drained loams but will tolerate more moist soils.
Maintenance: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil but will tolerate others. Will not tolerate alkaline soil. Grows well in desert or other dry areas. Water once a month in the hottest climates. Needs little fertilizer.
Diseases: Oak moth larvae, gypsy moth larvae, oak root fungus (Armillaria mellea), oak wilt fungus are all problems encountered now and again.
Other Species: 600 species altogether
Comments: This oak is a great source of cork for commercial purposes.
