Justicia brandegeana or the Shrimp Plant is an elegant evergreen shrub with an open rounded and sprawling habit.
The stems are covered in crinkly leaves that have a dull and green surface, lighter green and shiny underside with a soft hairy margins.
The new stems also have a woolly texture.
The spectacular feature of this shrub is the pendant white flowers that are surrounded by showy pale orange and yellow bracts. These bracts resemble a shrimp (or prawn, as they are known here in Australia). Althought the main flowering time is summer they are know to spot flower throughout the year.
These are thought of as an old fashioned flower and not as popular as they used to be. However they make a great addition to low shrub borders in tropical style gardens.
