Wisteria brachybotrys or the Silky Wisteria is one of the two Wisteria species native to Japan.
The flower sprays are shorter and wider than the better known species Wisteria floribunda.
A vigorous, deciduous climber which provides a spectacular floral display in Spring.
The fragrant, pendulous racemes (approx 300mm long) of pea-like, flowers appear before the leaves. They develop into bean-like seedpods.
Leaves are pinnate, softly hairy and pale green.
"Alba" has white flowers with yellow markings.
Although the plant is frost hardy the new flowers can be damaged by late frosts.
