Sambucus nigra or the Elderflower is a bushy deciduous shrub with an upright, tree-like habit and multiple spreading stems.
The leaves are dark green and compound with serrated leaflets that turn yellow in autumn.
The tiny flowers are strongly scented and are borne in clusters at the ends of the stems and are followed by glossy black berries.
The habit, foliage colour and scented flowers make this an excellent specimen shrub for border planting.
There are also variegated cultivars available.
The flowers and berries are collected for wine making and other culinary activities.
