Hi Felicity
Hedging around the side of a pool is always a difficult one. All plants will drop leaves, there are many palm options, these too require attention when the fronds die as they will either fall into the pool or need to be removed from the plant. Shrubs like Syzygium and Murraya that make good hedging elsewhere are not so suitable next to a pool. Although they do not lose many leaves they do need regular pruning, even if you can reach to prune them the cuttings will all fall into the pool and will need removing. We have a mix of palms ( a couple of tall palms plus Golden Cane and Parlour) around our pool the fronds do need removing twice a year and occasionally one will falls into the pool but the maintenance is minimal. The addition of bromeliads has given the area a tropical feel.
